The castle from the waterfront

Castle at Kavala, view from the harbour

History/Description: Large sections of this castle are Byzantine work (the two arched brick gateways for example). There is a large cistern and some barrel-vaulted chambers.

Directions: The castle or 'Frourion' can be reached from the seafront. Kavala is a busy port but there is a pleasant old quarter, a Turkish aquaduct, the house of Mehmet Ali and a museum to see besides the castle.
